From Refugee to Neighbor: Continuing the Conversation (A Community Forum)
November 12, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
LakewoodAlive will host a free community forum on Thursday, November 12 from 7pm – 8:30pm at Lakewood Public Library (15425 Detroit Avenue) featuring a conversation about the growing refugee community in Lakewood. The Greater Cleveland region is one of five resettlement communities in the country. In the past few years, Lakewood has welcomed 800 refugees to the community.
As part of Refugee Response and the Refugee Services Collaborative of Greater Cleveland ongoing series of community conversations, both sponsored by grants from Community West Foundation, LakewoodAlive invites guests to understand the difference between a refugee and an immigrant; hear of the transformation refugees are having on the community and public school system; and gain an overview of where refugees are coming from and what caused them to flee their homeland.
David Dombrowiak, President and CEO of the Community West Foundation will moderate the conversation. Panelists include:
• Toni Gelsomino City of Lakewood, Dir. Human Services, City of Lakewood
• Emma Petrie Barcelona, Board President, Lakewood City Schools
• Darren Hamm, Executive Director, Refugee Response
• Thomas Kate, Program Coordinator, Refugee Response
• Tom Mrosko, Director Migration and Refugee Services, Catholic Charities
Audience members will be encouraged to join the conversation and ask the panelists questions.
Ian Andrews, Executive Director of LakewoodAlive said, “We are thrilled to host this important local and global conversation. As the refugee crisis continues to evolve, the Middle East, Asia and Europe, this discussion is timelier than ever before. Lakewood is a welcoming community and cultural education is critical to understanding and friendship.”
