Downtown’s Historic Roots

Lakewood was born of agrarian roots and later evolved as a streetcar suburb. Overtime, the Downtown District has changed, sometimes embracing it’s historic building stock, other times leaning to suburban development trends. As the district moves forward, it’s critical that we preserve our remaining historic buildings as a nod to the past while ensuring the historic district propels Lakewood into the future. Visit the Lakewood Historical Society’s site and check out the Cleveland Memory Project for photo galleries.
